These plans enable you to invest your own money, along with your dividends, in more shares at no cost. While that alone is a great deal, some firms even offer optional cash purchase at a discount. The companies that offer a 5 percent DRIP discount also extend the discount to any additional money you invest. Most of these programs, however, put limits on optional cash purchases, usually of about $25,000 a year. (The companies don’t want to give away too much free money, after all.) Several companies not only allow you to reinvest dividends and optional cash at no charge; they also make it easy to buy your original shares directly from the companies themselves, without commissions.
