A semi-finalist in the Men Singles event at the Spanish Open in April 2011, when beaten by Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus, Ahmet Li was the player to cause the one upset of note at the quarter-final stage of the Men Singles event at the ITTF 2013 World Tour Egypt Open in Cairo on Saturday 23rd March 2013.

In an all Turkish encounter; occupying the fifth seeded place in the draw, he accounted for Bora Vang, the top seed, in six games (11-9, 10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 4-11, 11-5) to match his best ever performance on the ITTF World Tour.

Other than his semi-final appearance in Spain two years ago, Ahmet Li has never previously progressed beyond the third round of a Men Singles event on the ITTF World Tour.

No Further Upsets

An upset but there were no further upsets at the quarter-final stage of the Men Singles event.

The host nation Omar Assar, the no.2 seed, defeated Kuwait Ibrahem Al-Hasan, the no.7 seed (8-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-9, 11-8), whilst Abdel-Kader Salifou of France, the no.3 seed, accounted for Omar Assar colleague, Ahmed Saleh, the no.6 seed.

He won by the very narrowest of margins in the deciding seventh game (9-11, 16-14, 7-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-6, 11-9).

Success for Spain

Success for France and there was success for Spain; Marc Duran, the no.4 seed, ended the hopes of Egypt in form Mohamed Shouman (11-4, 11-8, 11-7, 11-5).

Gold for Belgium

Meanwhile, in the Under 21 Men Singles event, at the final hurdle matters went as seeding predicted but not in the counterpart Under 21 Women Singles competition where there was an upset.

Belgium Julien Indeherberg clinched the Under 21 Men Singles title justifying his top seeded place in the draw. He overcame Egypt Omar Bedair, the no.4 seed, in the final (11-9, 11-7, 7-11, 11-7, 11-7).

Home Win

Defeat for Egypt but in the Under 21 Women Singles final it was success for the host nation and success against the odds.

Dina Meshref, the no.2 seed, overcame Russia Yana Noskova, the no.1 seed to clinch the title. 

She won in five games (14-12, 11-6, 4-11, 11-6, 11-5).
